One of the most popular excursions for the taste connoisseurs aboard Hurtigruten ships is the King Crab Safari. For those who love the taste of crab and don't shy away from the cold, this afternoon excursion is an ideal adventure.

During the winter months, guests who choose to participate in the safari are driven by snowmobile across the frozen fjord to an ice hole, where, with various tools, they lay the King Crab traps and then wait to haul them in. While waiting, the guide explains Norway's use of the King Crab and various cooking methods that have developed since the Russians introduced the species in the 1960s.
The guides are friendly and informative, and will explain the process, and importance of crab to Norwegian history. This experience is followed by a snowmobile ride to a fisherman's cabin-turned-restaurant that is only accessible by snowmobile.
